The UIIC AO Exam Pattern and Syllabus 2026 is important for candidates preparing for the United India Insurance Company Limited Administrative Officer (Scale I) recruitment. UIIC has announced 225 Administrative Officer vacancies, comprising 200 Generalist and 25 Hindi Officer posts.
The 2026 selection process has been structured differently for the two disciplines at the Main Examination stage. The Preliminary Examination is common to both Generalist and Hindi Officer candidates, while the Main Examination has separate patterns and subject requirements.
Important: UIIC AO Recruitment 2026: Apply Online for 225 Posts
For Generalists, the Main Examination consists of a 250-mark objective test followed by a 30-mark descriptive English test. For Hindi Officers, the Main Examination consists of a 200-mark objective test followed by a 50-mark bilingual descriptive test.
Candidates should also understand the importance of sectional timing. Each objective section is separately timed, meaning unused time from one section cannot generally be carried over to another section. There is also a one-fourth negative-marking penalty for each wrong answer in the objective examinations.
UIIC AO Exam Pattern 2026: At a Glance
The examination can be broadly divided into the following stages:
- Preliminary Examination
- Main Examination
- Descriptive Test
- Interview
The Preliminary Examination is common to both disciplines. The Main Examination pattern changes according to whether the candidate has applied for the Generalist or Hindi Officer position.

Hindi Officer Main Objective Test
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time | Medium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 25 | 25 | 20 minutes | English |

Official Language Acts and Rules
This is a particularly important part of the Hindi Officer Professional Knowledge syllabus.

- Articles relating to language
- Official language implementation
- Use of Hindi in government offices

- Parliamentary Committee on Official Language

Candidates should study the relevant provisions systematically rather than relying only on objective-question compilations.

Candidates should practise:
English to Hindi
- Official letters
- Government notices
- Administrative passages
- Financial passages

Hindi Typing
Candidates should become comfortable with the prescribed Hindi keyboard layouts, including:
- Inscript
- Remington (GAIL)
The Hindi Officer examination therefore requires candidates to practise typing in Hindi before the examination rather than relying exclusively on handwritten practice.

Translation
Regularly translate short passages:
- English тЖТ Hindi
- Hindi тЖТ English
Candidates should concentrate on meaning, grammar, terminology and natural expression, rather than literal translation.
Negative Marking in UIIC AO Exam 2026
There is a penalty for incorrect answers in the objective examinations.
For every wrong answer, one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question is deducted.
There is no penalty for unanswered questions.
For example, if a question carries 1 mark, an incorrect answer results in a deduction of 0.25 mark.
Candidates should therefore avoid blind guessing, particularly when they cannot eliminate any options.
Sectional Timing: An Important Exam Strategy
One of the most important features of the UIIC AO examination is section-wise timing.
For example, in the Generalist Preliminary Examination:
- English: 20 minutes
- Reasoning: 20 minutes
- Quantitative Aptitude: 20 minutes
You cannot simply finish English in 10 minutes and use the remaining 10 minutes for Quantitative Aptitude. Each section has its own prescribed duration.
The same principle applies to the Main Examination.
Therefore, candidates should practise using section-specific mock tests, rather than only taking full-length tests.
UIIC AO Final Selection and Merit
The Preliminary Examination is primarily a screening stage.
For Generalists, the final merit is based on the Main Objective Examination and Interview in a 75:25 ratio. The descriptive test has to be qualified but does not contribute to final merit.
For Hindi Officers, the Main Examination, including the applicable objective and descriptive components, is considered with the Interview according to the prescribed 75:25 weightage. Preliminary marks are not included in the final merit.
UIIC AO Syllabus 2026: Subject-Wise Weightage
Generalist
| Subject | Prelims | Mains |
|---|---|---|
| English | 30 marks | 50 marks |
| Reasoning | 35 marks | 60 marks |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 marks | 60 marks |
| General/Financial Awareness | тАФ | 60 marks |
| Computer Knowledge | тАФ | 20 marks |
| Descriptive English | тАФ | 30 marks |
| Objective Total | 100 | 250 |
Hindi Officer
| Subject | Prelims | Mains |
|---|---|---|
| English | 30 | 25 |
| Reasoning | 35 | 25 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | тАФ |
| Professional Knowledge | тАФ | 100 |
| General Awareness | тАФ | 25 |
| Computer Knowledge | тАФ | 25 |
| Descriptive English & Hindi | тАФ | 50 |
| Objective Total | 100 | 200 |
The difference is crucial: Generalists need Quantitative Aptitude in both Prelims and Mains, whereas Hindi Officers replace Quantitative Aptitude in the Main Examination with Professional Knowledge.
How to Prepare for UIIC AO Prelims
A practical preparation strategy is to divide preparation into three areas.
English
Focus on grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and sentence-based questions.
Daily practice: 30 to 40 questions.
Reasoning
Start with simpler topics such as inequality, syllogism, coding-decoding and blood relations, then move towards puzzles and seating arrangements.
Daily practice: 30 to 50 questions.
Quantitative Aptitude
Build arithmetic fundamentals before moving to DI and advanced problems.
Daily practice: 25 to 40 questions.
The objective should not simply be solving a large number of questions. The real goal is to improve accuracy per minute.
How to Prepare for UIIC AO Generalist Mains
Generalist candidates should begin Main-level preparation alongside Preliminary preparation rather than waiting for the Preliminary result.
Priority 1: Financial Awareness
Study:
- RBI
- Banking system
- Insurance sector
- IRDAI
- Financial markets
- Government financial schemes
- Recent economic developments
- Union Budget
- Economic Survey

Priority 3: English
Work on:
- Reading comprehension

How to Prepare for UIIC AO Hindi Officer Mains
Hindi Officer candidates should allocate significant preparation time to Professional Knowledge.
A useful preparation split is:
Professional Knowledge тЖТ 45%
Descriptive Hindi/English тЖТ 20%
General Awareness тЖТ 15%
English + Reasoning тЖТ 15%
Computer тЖТ 5%
The exact allocation can be modified according to the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses.
The Professional Knowledge section carries 100 marks, making it the biggest scoring component of the objective Main Examination.

2. Calculation Errors
You knew the method but made a calculation mistake.
Solution: Practise timed calculations.
3. Conceptual Errors
You misunderstood the question.

Random guessing can significantly reduce the final score.
7. Read current affairs regularly
Focus particularly on banking, insurance, economy and financial-sector developments.

The UIIC AO Exam Pattern and Syllabus 2026 requires candidates to prepare differently depending on the discipline selected.
For Generalists, the most important Main Examination areas are Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English and Financial-Sector General Awareness. The descriptive English paper must also be qualified.
For Hindi Officers, the preparation strategy needs to be more specialised. The 100-mark Professional Knowledge section is the centrepiece of the Main objective examination, while Hindi-English translation, essays and letter writing form the core of the descriptive test.
Candidates should not make the common mistake of treating UIIC AO preparation as merely a Preliminary Examination exercise. Because the Main Examination and interview determine the final selection, preparation should cover the entire recruitment process from the beginning.
The smartest approach is therefore to combine concept building, current-affairs preparation, insurance and financial awareness, sectional practice, mock tests and timed descriptive writing. With sectional timing and negative marking in place, accuracy and time management are just as important as knowing the syllabus.
